Работата на екскурзоводите е да показват интересни места и забележителности на туристите и да им поднасят любопитна информация и факти свързани с тях.

Екскурзоводите на Острова най-често водят туристите си в замъци и други исторически постройки, както и на открито, където те могат да видят красиви сгради, паметници и др. подобни места. Екскурзиите, които се провеждат могат да бъдат с цел разглеждане на забележителности, опознаване на историята на страната, развеждане на специализирани групи, разходки с опознавателна цел, оглеждане на забележителности от автобус или минибус с гид и др.

Работното време на екскурзоводите зависи от  вида на работата им. Най-често срещана е почасовата работа. По време на туристическия сезон може да се работи до 40-50 часа на седмица. Екскурзоводите в замъците и историческите сгради работят редовна смяна на пълен работен ден. При останалите гидове работното време варира. Голяма част от работния ден се прекарва на крак. Работния процес може да бъде на закрито, открито или в движение и на път.

За да работите като екскурзовод в Обединеното кралство трябва да притежавате следните умения и качества:

  • Интерес към работата с хора;
  • Отлични комуникативни способности;
  • Увереност;
  • Отлично владеене на говорим английски език;
  • Умения за представяне на информация по интересен и увлекателен начин;
  • Отлична памет;
  • Интерес в областта на историята и архитектурата.

За да започнете работа като гид не са ви необходими никакви по-специални умения или квалификации. Доброто образование и опитът в работата с хора или на подобна работа ще са ви от полза. Владеенето на чужди езици е предимство, тъй като ще работите главно с туристи, сред които ще има и такива, които не говорят английски език.

Възможно е и да изкарате някой от множеството курсове по професията, чрез които ще се сдобиете с квалификация, чието ниво след това можете да повишавате. В някои исторически сгради, например Уестминстърския дворец, се допускат само групи с екскурзоводи с високо ниво на квалификация. Повечето курсове са с продължителност 20 седмици, но някои могат да отнемат до 2 години. Те са почасови с вечерни лекции и упражнения в почивните дни.

След като започнете работа като гид, от вас ще се очаква постоянно да обновявате познанията си чрез участие в различни семинари и образователни програми.

Повечето екскурзоводи предпочитат да работят като самонаети или за туроператори. Други работодатели могат да им бъдат държавни организации или собственици на атракции и исторически сгради. С добиването на опит, наетите от работодател екскурзоводи могат да се издигнат до мениджърски позиции. Самонаетите могат да отворят собствени туристически агенции.

Годишното заплащане на екскурзоводите се различава в зависимост от работодателя и местоположението им. Самонаетите екскурзоводи определят сами тарифите си.
